Shane breaks hearts with new Westwife: 29 December 2003

Westlife star Shane Filan broke innumerable teenage hearts yesterday when he signed up for the wedding band.

Among the 380 guests attending the lavish reception bash at Ashford Castle was Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and his wife Miriam. Last year, the couple's daughter Georgina married Nicky Byrne in a French chateau with a celebrity magazine paying Û850,000 for the photo rights.

"They are a lovely couple," Byrne said of Shane and Gillian Walsh. "I'm really looking forward to having a great party." Shane arrived, on time, at Ballintubber Abbey, Co Mayo, in a gleaming Bently. His bride was a fashionable 20 minutes late and opted for horse and carriage transport to the church.

After the ceremony the couple posed for photographs, thrilling media and 200 fans who travelled from every part of the country for the showbiz hitch.

"It's not every day you get to attend a ceremony like this in an 800-year-old abbey, it's been a lovely day," said Mr Ahern as the guests milled from the church to the reception.

Guests, including Ronan Keating and Louis Walsh, were asked not to give the couple presents but, if they wished, to make a donation to the North West Hospice.

Shane popped the question while he and Gillian were on holiday together in Dubai last year.

The Westlifer's elder brother Finbar acted as best man. Music at the strictly-behind-closed-doors wedding party scheduled to go on until some time this morning was not provided by chart-topping Westlife

. Instead, Shane was understood to have laid on another band, complete with its own DJ.

The couple are building a sprawling Û1.5 million house in Sligo. The house will have seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, a dining room to seat almost 20 people, a gym, sauna, snooker room and everything else you would expect of a pop star's palace.

The couple's marriage footsteps retraced those of 007 star Pierce Brosnan who choose Ballintubber Abbey and Ashford Castle for his wedding in 2001. Source: www.irishexaminer.com Posted:

That lovin' Filan: 29 December 2003

Westlife Shane ties knot with long-time love Gill Westlife's Shane Filan said he was "the luckiest guy in the world" as he wed his childhood sweetheart yesterday.

Guests, including Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, watched as Shane and Gillian Walsh exchanged vows at Ballintubber Abbey, County Mayo. Dressed in white, Shane joked with bandmates Kian Egan and Mark Fehilly as his bride turned up late.

When Gillian, wearing an embroideredwhite dress arrived at the altar, he whispered to her: "You look amazing." Afterwards, Shane said: "Looking at Gillian at the altar was the best moment of my life. I was welling up during the service. "I feel like the luckiest guy in the world and everything went according to plan. "It was great to go out there and wave to the fans and also see all our friends and family enjoying our big day. "Gillian felt like a princess and looked like one too."

Last night, guests enjoyed a wedding banquet at nearby Ashford Castle.

Kian Egan: Jodi's The One For Me: 18 December 2003

Westlife star Kian Egan hopes to marry his girlfriend Jodi Albert after finding true happiness with the actress.

The singer says he is fed up with girls throwing themselves at him and he can be himself around Jodi, who stars in British TV soap Hollyoaks.

Kian and Jodi first dated five years ago and rekindled their love after meeting at a Westlife gig.

He says, "As soon as I saw her again I knew she was the one. I'm hoping we still have that excitement in five years. When the band started out, having our choice of girls was a novelty but I don't want that anymore. Why would I want to be with a girl who doesn't like me for me?" (WENN)

News: January!!

Westlife singer worried about good-looking rivals: 9 January 2004

Bryan McFadden is warning his wife Kerry Katona not to flirt with "good-looking men" like Dean Gaffney in the I'm a Celebrity show.

The Westlife singer says he fears she may try to get her own back on him by chatting up the former EastEnders actor.

The Daily Star quotes McFadden as saying: "I'm dreading Kerry going to Australia. She's a naturally flirtatious person and I'm worried that she won't be able to stop herself while surrounded by good-looking men.

"Last year, Phil Tufnell had a girlfriend back home but that didn't stop him and Linda Barker - who was married - striking up a real chemistry out there," he said. Source: www.ananova.com Posted:

topic:          Westlife's Bryan to launch rock band

Comments:          Bryan McFadden has been managing a rock band and is ready to launch them onto the music scene.

The Daily Mirror says he spotted Franklin while he was on honeymoon in South Africa in 2002.

Bryan said: "Franklin are a brilliant band with a great sound which is why I am backing them."

The newspaper says he's been keeping details of the band under wraps because he didn't want to be seen working with another group while he was still in Westlife.

Now he's busy writing and producing songs with the South Africans and will co-manage them with his best friend Mark Murphy.

Bryan said: "The music I want to do won't be in competition with Westlife. Franklin do rock music which is different to Westlife and my own solo stuff will be different again." Wednesday, March 24th 2004 - 06:50:14 AM

With the least votes he gets the chop this week to make way for new boys McFly.

Evanescence keep their place at the top of the rock chart.

And Bowling for Soup get the new entry spot replacing Foo Fighters.

In the TV chart it's goodbye to Spongebob Squarepants and hello to US comedy Will and Grace.

But it's been a bad week for Sarah Michelle Gellar and Finding Nemo.

After only a week on the celeb and computer charts they both get the boot.

The Buffy actress is replaced by Harry Potter star Rupert Grint - can he challenge Orlando Bloom's crown?

And Nemo's place on the chart is taken by Ratchet & Clank 2.

Lord of the Rings is still your fave thing, but you've had enough of shopping. It drops off the chart this week and is replaced by books.

David Beckham comes top of your sports star chart again.

topic: Louis Walsh talks candidly about Bryan's departure

Comments:          None of us knew until last week that Bryan was leaving. We were at the Meteor Awards in Dublin where the band won best pop act when some said Bryan wanted to see me.

Bryan would always joke around, so when he said: "Louis, I just don't want to do this anymore,' I thought he was joking. "No," he said. "I really don't want to be part of Westlife anymore. I want to enjoy my life - play golf, football, see Kerry and the kids." He said he'd told Kerry when she got back from the jungle.

But I still didn't believe him. I still thought he was having a laugh. That's the kind of guy he is. Nor did I think anything was wrong when he wouldn't have his picture taken with the rest of the boys after the awards ceremony. But at the party after the event Kerry said to me that she'd noticed a big change in him since she'd come out of the jungle. She looked kind of sad because he used to be the life and soul of the party.

The next day the other boys looked worried and asked me if he was really serious. I said I didn't think so. I still thought he was joking around. But later when he told the boys again that he wanted to leave, I began to think there might be something in it and by Wednesday I knew for certain that something was wrong.

Initially I didn't understand and I was a bit scared. It shook me because this wasn't Boyzone. We'd had not one row in the six years we've been together! So I met up with the four others at Nicky's house. We sat down and talked. I said to them: "If Bryan wants to go that's fine. He's entitled to his life. But we'll carry on."

The boys were saying that they loved Westlife, that it was their life. In the end the meeting was extremely positive and I went away knowing I had four great lads who were going to give it 100 percent. After all, there were four in The Beatles.

When both the lawyer and accountant said Westlife was a huge band, too young and too talented to break up, the boys' spirit and determination lifted. It was amazing because now they had something to prove. We even called Simon Cowell in LA and he confirmed what I thought: "You've got to keep going," he said. "Come back with a number one and everyone will forget what's happened."

So on Sunday March 7th we all met up with Bryan. We told him we were happy for him to go but we were going to keep the band going. Everyone was crying - it was very emotional. Later that evening I had to do an Irish TV shoe with Bryan. It was the Irish version of Pop idol to select our Eurovision song entry and it was great because the song Bryan wrote won. We celebrated together afterwards. He was acting as if nothing had happened.

We arranged the press reception for last Tuesday to announce to the world that Bryan was leaving Westlife. Kian read out a letter saying how much they all loved him and by the end of it everyone was crying again. There's a lot of emotion in this band.

Bryan left because he wasn't happy being in the band anymore. It's as simple as that, there was no falling out or bad feeling. Of course we were disappointed to lose him but at the end of the day we want what is best for Bryan. He's given 100 percent to Westlife for the past six years and now he wants to devote more time to his family and himself. That's fair enough. He said that he didn't care about the money, that it was about much more than money. I admire that attitude.

I don't know if it was Kerry being in the jungle that prompted him to quit. I just know that he felt it was time to think more clearly about his life. Kerry wanted him to stay in the band but knowing he was unhappy she supported him leaving. His mother felt the same. I admire his honesty for saying how he felt. There's nothing false about Bryan, nothing to criticise. Okay he's a bit mad and wild, cracks jokes a lot and is very unpredictable, but he's a totally loveable person. We all love him.

Westlife are different from any other band I've managed. Three of the group - Shane, Mark and Kian - come from Sligo in the west of Ireland from pretty humble backgrounds. Bryan and Nicky come from Dublin. They were very young when I found them and all they wanted to do was be a band - unlike other bands fame wasn't their agenda.

There's no comparison with Boyzone. I put Boyzone together through auditions and from the beginning they wanted to be famous without putting in the work. Boyzone didn't appreciate what they had. For instance it was me who picked all their songs. They should have looked around and taken a reality check because the pop business is fickle and there's always someone ready to take your place. That's why I admire people like Cliff Richard or Elton John because they've just kept going. I told Ronan Keating he was like Cliff Richard once but he took offence. It was meant as a compliment!

Compared to other bands Westlife's attitude to life is very different. They don't take anyone or anything for granted. They're more real, more genuine and more honest than any of the others I've managed. They really understand and support each other.

Since Bryan left the boys have been in rehearsal working incredibly hard. They're like a new band because there's a new energy and determination. I really don't think their popularity will suffer. The tour hasn't been cancelled and each one of the boys still has a huge fan base.

I'm not sure what Bryan will do next. He's managing a new band called Franklin, a south African rock band who he hangs with a lot and he's also got Kerry and the kids to think of. Kerry's got her career as well - especially now - and I think he'd like to do something with her but I don't think they'll make records together.

There's no hard feelings. Mark went out drinking with Bryan last night and we'll all stay friends. I've a lot of respect for all those boys. They've kept their feet on the ground. I know because I've seen how fame can ruin people.

But the pop world is a tough world and it makes people tough. When Ronan Keating sacked me I was really annoyed but I'm over that now. Something like that actually makes you stronger in the end, as well as more wary of people in the business. As a manger the most important thing is to like what you do and I really do like what I do. I also know a hit when I hear one. I've had 27 number ones and I know I'm going to have more this year.

The boys are working like hell. The tour is sold out and it will be sensational. We're starting in Belfast on March 29th. Westlife are the most popular band in Northern Ireland and I think this will be a better show than last time. Because Bryan has left we're a tighter team than we have ever been and the boys are determined to make it work. They've seen other bands such as Boyzone, Five, Backstreet Boys - all break up and they don't want this to happen to them. I don't see how it can with so much support from fans all around the world encouraging them all to carry on. I've no doubt they'll come back with another number one. topic: LIFE after Bryan doesn't look so bad for Westlife

Comments:          Despite working 23-hour days in preparation for their upcoming World Tour, the remaining four lads - Kian, Shane, Mark and Nicky - managed to nip out for a swift pint on St Patrick's Day on Wednesday.

And their willpower was impressive. Rather than settle down in the boozer for the afternoon, the lads headed back to the studio after just one beer.

The boys' tour kicks off in Belfast on March 29 and takes them across England, China, Thailand, South Korea and Malaysia. Saturday, March 20th 2004 - 01:01:19 PM

topic: We begged Bryan to stay

Comments:          Westlife's Nicky Byrne tried to persuade Bryan McFadden to see a counsellor to get him to stay in the group.

Nicky has lifted the lid on secret negotiations between the remaining band members and Bryan during a 72-hour lock-in at Nicky's Dublin home as they tried to stop him quitting.

He says the bizarre suggestion was a last-gasp bid to iron out any differences Bryan might have with his bandmates.

Nicky said: 'He told us on the Thursday that he wanted to quit. That was a huge bombshell, the last thing I expected.

'The band spent all of Friday, Saturday and Sunday locked in my house with our manager, Louis Walsh. It was like the Northern Ireland peace process.

'We were locked in the room for days trying to stop Bryan from leaving and find out what was really bothering him.

'We even asked if there were problems at home. He just told us he didn't want to be in a band anymore.

'I offered him counselling. I told the lads, 'This is just like a marriage and if a marriage is going down the tubes you'd see a counsellor.

'Westlife is more or less like a marriage, so let's see a counsellor and see if we can work out what is bothering Bryan.' But his mind was made up.'

The group haven't seen Bryan since he walked out of Dublin's Four Seasons hotel last week during a Press conference to announce he was quitting.

But they insist they are looking forward to new life as a four-piece.

Nicky, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan are planning a duets album for November featuring Motown legends Lionel Richie and Diana Ross, Donna Summer and Daniel Bedingfield.

And Nicky said they won't welcome Bryan back with open arms if he realised he'd made a terrible mistake. Nicky said: 'In a way, Bryan going is maybe a blessing in disguise because we'll be doing the duets as a four-piece with some of the world's top artists.

'That might ease Westlife fans into the new line-up. The one I'm looking forward to working with the most is Lionel Richie. We've swapped ideas. It would be great to do a classic Lionel song.

'Some might say we are replacing Bryan with Lionel, but it's just the four of us on tour. And Bryan lives minutes from me, so we'll see each other. He called us up when he saw us on Ireland's Late Late Show on Friday and said it was the strangest thing watching the four of us.

'He is going through ups and downs wondering if he did the right thing. But the decision's made.We won't be standing with open arms if he asks to come back.

'Maybe in three or four months he'll regret it and, of course, we'd talk to him.'

Nicky believes Bryan has already laid the foundations for a solo career.

But he is sure Bryan will have his work cut out reaching the heights of Westlife.

Nicky said: 'I'm not going to slag off Bryan's chances but it is going to be difficult. Bryan knows he'll have to put his heart and soul into it.

'He's probably going to take a year off first to look after the kids and record some stuff in Dublin. I don't think he'll sing ballads. It'll be something off the cuff.'

Next up,Westlife are planning to sing at this summer's Live+Loud festival.

They pulled out of the Scots festival two years ago to watch Ireland play Spain in the World Cup on TV. In the end, the gig was called off due to a waterlogged site. Now they hope to make amends by playing Hampden Park on June 20 alongside Blue, Sugababes and Michelle McManus. Nicky beamed: 'We'd love it. We need our fans' support more than ever now. I want to reassure them we will be around for a long time.' Saturday, March 20th 2004 - 12:59:46 PM
